Technique for Installation of Natural Floorcoverings

This document sets out the recommended fitting technique for natural floorcoverings supplied by The Naked Flooring Company. If this method is not carried out as specified, no claims for shrinkage, bubbling etc. will be entertained. Please also pay attention to the suitability of each of the floor coverings, as no claims will be accepted if the flooring is fitted in an unsuitable location.

Pre-Installation Process

Before you start fitting please ensure:-
  1. The sub floor is dry, level, sound and dust free and prepared to British standards (BS5325: 1996).
  2. The floor covering is checked to ensure that it is the correct material, the right size and there are no visible defects. Irregularities in the weave, colour variations, slubs, tufts and knots are part of the natural charm of the product and as such are not manufacturing defects or valid cause for complaint. Check the flooring is acceptable BEFORE CUTTING. Remember, once the floorcovering has been cut by yourselves, you have agreed that the floor covering is acceptable. Please refer to our terms and conditions
  3. The flooring is acclimatised in the area it is to be laid for at least 48hrs. The flooring must be unwrapped and loosely rolled to allow air to circulate around the flooring for at least 48 hours in the same area that it is to be laid.
  4. There are no other sources of excessive moisture in the area the floor covering is to be laid e.g. damp walls.

Installation Process

The Naked Flooring Company only recommends the following “Double Stick” system for the installation of their natural floorcoverings.
  1. Fix short pin or blind (no pins) gripper around the perimeter of the room. Allow a gully between the gripper and the wall/skirting to allow for bolstering later.
  2. Apply tackifier (e.g. F Ball F40) to the floor with a roller or trowel as per the manufacturers instructions. When the tackifier has dried lay the underlay into the tackifier and tape up the joints in the underlay with single sided tape. Recommended underlays are Tredaire Contract or Duralay’s Durafit.
  3. Alternatively if the floor is boarded it may require preparing with plywood and the underlay can be fixed with 75mm band of permanent adhesive around the perimeter then fully stapled at 150-220mm centres and joints taped with single sided tape.
  4. Roll out the floor covering over the underlay and rough-cut allowing at least 6cm oversize all round. (Please note the floor covering must have been acclimatised in the area it is to be laid for at least 48hrs. This can be done at this stage or prior to commencing the installation, but it must be carried out before the next stage.)
  5. Fold back the floorcovering by 50% of its area and using a 2mm X 6mm V notch trowel (3mm X 6mm for coir) apply the permanent adhesive to the underlay (e.g. F Ball F3). Take care to allow the trowel to glide over the underlay, as too much downward pressure on to the trowel will reduce the effectiveness of the notch size to apply the correct quantity of adhesive. (Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions).
  6. Now lay the floorcovering back into the adhesive. Then fold back the other half and repeat step 5.
  7. Use a 15kg glider over the entire floor area to ensure adequate transfer of adhesive to the back of the floorcovering.
  8. When the adhesive has “grabbed” the floorcovering, trim off the excess around the perimeter with a straight blade or scissors and bolster down into the gully left by the gripper.
  9. For extra security the floor covering can be stapled on to the gripper using an electric stapler e.g. Maestri.
  10. Any exposed edges at doorways etc. must be protected with either metal door bars or wooden threshold trips.

Seaming and Joins

If the area is over 4m wide, acceptable but visible seams can be achieved.
First trim off the selvedges with scissors following the line of the weave and seal with a suitable edge sealer (e.g. F Ball F30). As the material is placed onto the permanent adhesive a heat seam tape can be placed along the join, then keeping the two edges slightly proud heat seam in the usual way. Then fit as above from step 4.

Installation on Stairs

Please refer to product suitability to check that it is recommended for use on stairs. The Naked Flooring Company will not entertain any complaints for floorcoverings fitted on stairs that we have not recommended for this purpose.
  1. Blank or short-pinned gripper is fitted to the tread and riser at the crotch of the stair. The gripper should leave a space approx. 11/2 times the thickness of the floor covering being installed to allow the floor covering to be bolstered in later.
  2. A suitable underlay e.g. Tredaire Contract, is laid from the gripper on the tread, over the nosing of the stair and down to the gripper on the riser, please refer to the diagram. The underlay should be stuck using a permanent adhesive e.g. F Ball F3 or alternatively can be fixed by stapling at the back of the step, along the front of the step and over the riser.
  3. Using a permanent adhesive (e.g. F Ball F3) the floor covering is fixed to the underlay on the tread and bolstered tightly into the gap between the gripper into the crotch of the stairs.
  4. If required, the floorcovering can be stapled under the nose using an electric stapler (e.g. Maestri) and also for added security can be stapled onto the grippers.
In areas of heavy use or contract situations The Naked Flooring Company recommends the use of stair nosings. In keeping with our policy of constant improvement, this information may be updated without notice.

Dragon boat racing + More info about carpets

The Annual Dragon Boat Festival in the Bristol City Docks.
We are proud to have contributed and took part in raising £30,000 for charities making a good contribution towards the overall money raised. It was cold raining and dark yet we have managed to have a brilliant time by having barbecue!! and a good laugh.

Below we are also giving out some hints and tips that we hope you find useful when purchasing a new floor covering:
  • Whether you are buying a classic floor covering or modern contemporary be sure you select a product that not only suits your budget but its life expectancy in you house.
  • How long are you staying in your current home.
  • How long do you need this floor covering to last.
  • How many people live in your home.
  • How many pets do you have, it is considered one dog causes the same wear and tear as four young children.
  • Flooring is no different to anything else make sure the preparation is correct. Prepare the floor and use the correct underlay.
  • Ensure the people fitting your carpet are following British Standards BS5325 2001 each retailer should own a copy to refer to

  • Carpet Types
Loop Pile
berber Berber - Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade bulky wool carpet made by Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
levelloop Level Loop - When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it's a good blend between luxury and practicality.
multilevelloop Multi-Level Loop - The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
Cut Pile
Frieze Frieze - Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to Saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface, which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
saxony Saxony - Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
twist Twist - The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
velvet Velvet - Velvet textures (sometime called 'velour' or 'plush') all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to 'shade' with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
Cut & Loop
shag Shag Pile - Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
